Children of Light is a community oriented organization, committed to building long lasting relationships with the people we partner with.

Applicants must be available to contribute to Children of Light initiatives in Gambo, Ethiopia as well as in Canada.

About the Program

Children of Light facilities a youth summer program in the rural region of Gambo, Ethiopia during the months of July and August. The volunteer run program is provided to the community free of charge and includes roughly 200 children.  English as a second language is the focus of the curriculum. Extra-curricular activities also include music, art, a children’s program and a girl’s program.  Click here for more information on our ESL summer program.

Who should apply?

We welcome volunteers from Canada to become involved with our program.  Those who share our vision in reducing childhood poverty, and connect with our core values, should consider applying to teach in Gambo.  Strong applicants include ESL teachers who have experience working abroad, and those who have previously worked with children. We will also consider educational background and work experience.

Applicants should have both an enthusiasm and passion for working with children.  Volunteers must be capable of quickly adapting to foreign environments and fast changing circumstances.

Volunteer Responsibilities

Volunteers are required to manage their own classrooms, create their own lesson plans, and have a comprehensive  understanding of  how to teach English as a second language.  Teachers are also responsible for keeping student records organized, marking weekly tests, and preparing report cards.

Teachers also facilitate extra-curricular programs, including a visual arts and music program, a girl’s literacy program,  and a children’s program.  Volunteers are expected to interact with students outside of the classroom as well, becoming well integrated into the community of Gambo.

Volunteers must be able to commit not only to volunteering in Ethiopia, but supporting our initiatives in Canada as well; this includes volunteering at our fundraising events.
