CoL-ourstoryoneChildren of Light is a registered charitable organization, founded in January 2012. The community has been growing since July 2008 when founders Laura Pereira and Nicole Manteiga first traveled to Gambo, Ethiopia.  They were asked by the community to teach the children the fundamentals of the English language; little did they know that the joy and determination of the children would inspire the creation of Children of Light.  It was in the small rural village of Gambo, where our organization started to take shape, growing from the inspiration of all the children who radiate light.
CoL-ourstorytwo Since the summer of 2008, Children of Light has been running an ESL summer program where volunteers from Canada teach in Ethiopia between July and August. Accordingly, the children of Gambo have become far more than just a set of impressionable students, but are now an integral part of our family, and a resonating reminder of our calling and duty to help them reach beyond the limitations of childhood poverty.
Our curriculum has grown to encompass an English, art, music, girl’s literacy and preschool program. In addition to our vital summer programs, we also facilitate and provide educational and family sponsorships to children and families in the village of Gambo. We are inspired by the creativity and determination of Ethiopian culture, and as a growing group of passionate volunteers, we dedicate a substantial amount of time, energy and resources into serving those who are affected by poverty.
